Freedom @75  ‘आजादी का अमृत महोत्सव’

Seventy five years ago, on this day, India was reborn.

Breaking free from the shackles of British occupation, the country took its first steps to becoming what it is today-a thriving, multicultural society which happens to be the world’s largest democracy.

India has come a long way since Independence, from the agony of partition to becoming the second fastest growing economy, and in the process has lifted millions out of poverty, become a global powerhouse in technology and healthcare, has a robust space program and an equally flourishing movie entertainment industry. It is a space and nuclear power, and yet remains a torch bearer of democratic values.

Even as it is a symbol of modernisation, India is also an ancient land, with its traditions, art and culture being preserved over the centuries. In art,  Indian artists have been creators of not just works but whole movements. Three of those are the Bengal and Bombay schools and the Madras Art Movement. From these innovative and indeed rebellious, efforts great Indian artists have emerged and become part of the global movement and market.o.

As a painter, and a patriot, I will be part of the ongoing 75th Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration. My mission is to create 75 paintings this year on Indian flag sized canvases. The show will be inaugurated in Chitrkala Parishad and will also travel to Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai to mark this celebration and symbolise equally, both the unity and diversity of the country and its people.
