Chinha, the brainchild of Satish Naik was established in the year 1984. His first creation was Kala Kird, the first artists’ directory in India which gave complete information on the subject of art and artists.
In that period there was not much digital information on the subject and no one else dared to do this herculean task. Even as of date, no one has ventured into doing it.
Satish Naik suffered a huge financial loss in this, but he didn’t waver from his aim and in 1987, published a Diwali issue called Chinha, which came in to the attention of Marathi readers and much appreciated. Though this issue received accolades, financially it was not rewarding.
In 1988 and also 1989, Mr. Naik published Diwali issues which gained much fame but earned no money for him. But after these attempts and repeated losses, Chinha’s publication had to be stopped.
But when the death of internationally acclaimed painter Gaitonde was given a brief coverage of few lines in media, it upset and pained Mr. Naik, and in 2001,he came back to his readers with a special supplement on Gaitonde. The digital revolution helped Chinha in getting publicity and worldwide attention.
Seeing that the response to the print magazines was getting less and less, Satish Naik decided to stop publication after 14 issues and recognized the steps of changing time and started an online issue. Failed in the first attempt, but did not stop Satish Naik from conveying his thoughts and ideas to the people by using the social media properly.
Chinha Art News is the result of that. By using this very effective medium, Satish Naik is trying to present Indian visual arts to the world.
