DakshinaChitra is a cross cultural living museum of art, architecture, lifestyles, crafts and performing arts of South India. It is a project of Madras Craft Foundation, an NGO. The museum promotes handicrafts and textile of South India through various activities such as workshops, exhibitions and visits, talks and seminars. Crafts are available for purchase at crafts shop and Bazaar. Traditional houses of each South Indian state have been reconsturcted as exhibits showcasing the traditional South Indian architecture.

This is the second oldest museum and art gallery in India. The National Art Gallery, which forms a part of the museum, has paintings of legendary artists like Raja Ravi Varma on display. Traditional paintings of Tanjore, Rajput and Mughal era along with paintings of the contemporary period can be found here. It has the richest collection of bronze idols in Asia, 500 of them dating to 1000 BCE. The new Rock and Cave Art Gallery displays the Rock and Cave Art found in the ancient Petroglyphs.
