A Captivating Encounter with Salgado
Ketan Karani, an avid art collector and patron of ‘Chinha’ recently had a remarkable visit to Sundaram Tagore Gallery in New York. Karani explored the outstanding exhibition “AmazĆ“nia” by the world -renowned photographer and activist-artist, SebastiĆ£o Salgado. Karani found himself captivated by the works of Salgado, the breathtaking images adorning the walls, leaving an indelible impression on him.
During his visit, Karani had the honour of presenting Sundaram Tagore, the gallery’s esteemed Director, with a book authored by veteran Indian art critic late Keshav Malik titled “A Critic’s View: Art reviews of 37 artists (1965-2013)”. This gesture served as a token of gratitude for Tagore’s significant contributions to the art world and his impressive curation of exhibitions over the years. However, the surprises did not end there. Karani’s was delighted when he was introduced to none other than SebastiĆ£o Salgado himself, a legendary figure in the realm of photography. Engaging in a profound conversation lasting approximately 30 minutes, Karani was truly inspired by Salgado’s visionary perspective and unwavering dedication to capturing the essence of humanity and nature through his lens.
In a display of heartfelt appreciation, Sundaram Tagore graciously gifted Karani a book showcasing the exceptional work of Salgado. To further elevate its significance, Tagore requested Salgado to personally autograph the book, leaving Karani overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. This unique memento holds a cherished place in his collection, forever commemorating this extraordinary encounter.
The “AmazĆ“nia” exhibition itself was an awe-inspiring visual masterpiece. Salgado’s unwavering commitment to documenting the unspoiled beauty of the Amazon and its indigenous population was evident in every meticulously crafted photograph. The series not only depicts stunning landscapes but also provides a glimpse into the daily lives of tribes. It serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to protect this precious ecosystem and its inhabitants.
Beyond “AmazĆ“nia,” the gallery has showcased select works from Salgado’s Magnum Opus series, including “Genesis” and “Workers.” These platinum-palladium prints were truly captivating, illustrating Salgado’s ability to tell compelling stories through his lens.
Karani left Sundaram Tagore Gallery with an enduring memory of his visit and encounter with SebastiĆ£o Salgado. Chinha team is privileged to share the happiness of Ketan Karani.Ā
