‘Stone and Paint’ at Jehangir!
Three artists from Gulbarga in Karnataka are presenting their paintings and sculptures as a group art exhibition titled ‘Stone and Paint’ at Jehangir Art Gallery at Mumbai. All three of them, viz. Dr Ashok Shatkar, Basavaraj V Kamaji and Ningappa D Keri are teaching faculty members at Art Integration College of Fine Art, Gulbarga.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Tuesday 1st August 2023, through the hands of Senior Artist Mr Virendra Shah, Eminent sculptor Mr Ratan Krishna Saha as Chief guest and Mr Vineel Bhurke, Executive editor of Chinha Art News as Guest of honour. The function was well attended by artists and art lovers alike.
Dr Ashok Shatkar is a prolific artist who has received several awards, including state level Rajyotsava award of Gulbarga University (thrice), Hyderabad Art Society award, Karnataka State Lalit Kala Academy award, Dr J S Khanderao award, Junior Research Fellowship award from Ministry of Culture, New Delhi. He has completed a PhD in Art from Gulbarga University.
Dr Ashok works in both figurative and abstract styles in a variety of media. Nature is the primary source of his inspiration while women and their emotive expressions form the central themes of his creative pursuit. Even though women appear as the carriers of the essence that he depicts in his paintings, Dr Ashok clarified that those core expressions are stemming from the universal sensations emanating from nature.
Basavaraj V Kamaji is from Gulbarga, a postgraduate in Visual Art. He has 8 awards to his credit including Gulbarga University Rajyotsava and Karnatak Lait Kala Academy annual award. He has exhibited his work consistently at state and national level. He majorly works in portraits and landscapes in various media and styles.
In this exhibition, Basavaraj has presented beautiful works depicting many expressive visions of cattle. His source inspiration for this series is his childhood memories of numerous cattle possessed by his family, which were not just animals but were considered as part of the family. Basavaraj explored the beautiful forms emerging from their movements juxtaposed against the rural landscape of his native village Munnahalli in Karnataka. His study of Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy led him to paint portraits of Gandhi which provide an integrated view of the 11 principles put forth by Gandhi.
Ningappa D Keri is a postgraduate in Visual Art and a trained sculptor. He has been consistently exhibiting his sculptures since 2011, at exhibitions organized by eminent art institutions including Chitrakala Parishath, Karnataka Shilpa Kala Academy, Nehru Art Gallery JNAFAU, Art Society of India, Bombay Art Society and Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi. He has received several awards including Karnataka Rajyotsav award of Gulbarga University, ‘Samaskar award’ of Kalyana Karnatka Sanskrutika Parishath, Karnataka Shilpakala Academy ‘Shilpashri’ award.
Ningappa finds inspiration in the forms which he observes in nature including plants, birds and animals and expresses them using a variety of sculpture media like stone, metal and wood. He also has presented contemplative sculptures on current topics such as education in the digital era.
This exhibition provides an opportunity to peek into the primordial sensations that these three artists have carefully gathered from deeply sensitive observations of nature and presented in a tangible form. Therefore, even though many of the art works may appear figurative and some abstract, all of them go beyond the duality of figurative and abstract styles of expression.
The exhibition is open for visitors till 7th August from 11 am to 7 pm at Jehangir Art Gallery.
