Exhibitions at Jehangir – Week 39 of 2023

Amid the continued festive atmosphere of Ganesh Chaturthi, art exhibitions of this week at Jehangir Art Gallery opened with a befitting enthusiasm. The exhibition plan this week has a lineup of five new exhibitions – Four solo and one group show. Here is a brief account of these shows.
Auditorium Hall
“Old Fires Keep On Burning” – A solo exhibition of sculptures by Raj Shahani.
Raj Shahani, a self-taught artist based in USA, opens his magnum opus with a circular constellation of 24 sculptures in bronze, marble, granite, stoneware, glass, terracotta, ceramic, iron and paper. Raj Shahani sought himself out of difficulties of severe dyslexia and ADHD as a child, by sketching. His drawings were alter egos, superheroes and people he saw himself as, not one scorned, bullied or isolated for being himself. Images of the so called ‘Apsaras’ or celestial beings in the female form have captivated his imagination for long, which have inspired him to create their full bodied sculptures in multiple media. The show is organized by gallery ‘Art and Soul’.

“Contours of Time” – A solo exhibition of paintings by Arpita Basu
Arpita Basu is a seasoned artist from Kolkata, with an MVA qualification from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. She is the recipient of Grant from “The Pollock – Krasner Foundation Inc.” New York, USA, as well as National Scholarship, Govt. of India. She has exhibited widely at Kolkata, New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai in India and in France, UK and USA. Arpita is deeply influenced by the rich cultural heritage of rural Bengal. Her works strive to capture the rhythms, traditions, and artistic styles that are emblematic of this region. Inspired by Persian art, Mughal miniature paintings, Bengal and Neo Bengal School of art and folk art (also known as, ‘alpona’ designs), she seeks to showcase the essence of everyday life in rural and urban settings.

A solo exhibition of paintings by Nilesh Pawar
Explorations into both subject and medium seems to be an ongoing process in the journey of Nilesh Pawar as an artist. From conventional, yet alluringly sensitive still life works, to stylized figure based symbolic composition, and then to his recent series on the 5 Elements of nature, the journey of exploration continues. Nilesh explores the significance of the five elements of nature and their relationship with man and also between the elements themselves.

A solo exhibition of paintings by Dattatray Shinde
Dattatray Sawata Shinde has been formally trained as Art Teacher at Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalay, Pune and as Art Master at Sai Chitrakala Mahavidyalay, Pune. He has exhibited widely and has received several accolades including art prizes in art teachers’ competitions. He works in diverse media including water colours, oil and acrylic colours. Nature and Spiritual worship practices in Maharashtra are major influences that inspire his artistic creations.

A solo exhibition of Paintings by Nanasaheb Baburao Potdar
Nanasaheb Potdar is a well-known artist specializing in Indian figurative paintings. Mumbai based Potdar Fine Art is a company which has established name for itself as suppliers of figurative paintings. Paintings of Indian Gods, Goddesses and of Rajasthani Ladies Fetching Water are some popular paintings of the artist among other figurative works.
Hirji Jehangir Gallery
“Abhivyakti” (Expression) – A group exhibition of Paintings by Dhiraj Patil, Pradip Ghadge, and Ujjval Pargaonkar
Dhiraj Patil through his abstract and figurative paintings expresses the inner dialogue of art and art lover which is to be felt in the joy of experience. He expresses the beautiful feelings of human emotions with nature, the different feelings of the human mind through his works.
Pradip Ghadge has expressed his devotional experience through realistic figurative paintings in his unique style. He passionately portrays the human mind immersed in devotion to the lord.
Ujjval Pargaonkar aspires to innovation by leaving aside the basic definition of shape, breaking through, abstract painting creation. He has expressed free invention of colour through his figurative and abstract works.
Art lovers can plan their visit to Jehangir Art Gallery to experience these wonderful exhibitions until 2nd October between 11 am and 7 pm.
