‘Abhirup’ – A solo exhibition of paintings by Jayashree Patankar

Jayashree Patankar is a senior Mumbai based artist and an alum of Sir J J School of Art. She has been consistently exhibiting her work through solo and group shows in India and abroad, over the last four decades. Her current exhibition ‘Abhirup’ presents a unique collection as it is the outcome of her research on a traditional painting style of Maharashtra – ‘Chitra kathi’ (Narrating a story by means of pictures) that is almost extinct. A distinctive feature of her work is that while painting in the traditional style of Chitra Kathi, she paints the contemporary life around her. As a modern day artist trained at J J School of Art, her compositions lean towards a western approach with tempering of the traditional approach. Moreover, she makes her own colours from natural fibres and vegetable dyes, infusing a unique ‘lost world effect’ into her works.
