AstaGuru’s ‘Iconic Masters’ Auction – A Resounding Success!

AstaGuru Auction House concluded their latest auction ‘Iconic Masters’ with resounding success, which was conducted during 27-28th October. The auction featured a carefully curated collection of 190 lots, taking art enthusiasts on a captivating journey through significant eras of Modern Indian Art. The auction witnessed sale of 187 lots out of the 190 lots presented, with a total sale value of USD 6305290 (INR 53.59 Crores).

The collection showcased the works of revered artists such as Bikash Bhattacharjee, Jehangir Sabavala, Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Homi Bhabha, Krishen Khanna, K.H. Ara, Somnath Hore, Ram Kumar, and Amrita Sher-Gil and many more, who have significantly shaped India’s art scene.

Three works by eminent modernists Jaya Appasamy, K.M. Adimoolam and Nagji Patel set new records for the artists by exceeding the estimated sale value with a significant margin.

Lot no. 23, an untitled work by Jaya Appasamy was acquired for INR 7,13,900 which far exceeded the estimate of INR 1,00,000 to 2,00,000.

Lot no. 33, an untitled marble sculpture by Nagji Patel was acquired for INR 3,71,270 exceeding the estimated value of INR 1,00,000 to 2,00,000.

Lot no. 36, oil painting titled ‘Mystical Land’ by K M Adimoolam exceeded the estimate of INR 1,00,000 to 2,00,000 by a whopping 12 times with the sale value of INR 24,45,354.

Among the works by the Indian modern masters, the following were the significant highlights.

Lot no. 126 titled ‘Jagrat’ by S.H. Raza was acquired for INR 6,83,60,668. This large-scale acrylic on canvas work executed in 2004 comes from Raza’s vast body of work which formed the phase of exploration of his iconic ‘Bindu’ works.

Another oil on canvas work, lot no. 31, by Raza titled ‘Village au Ciel Orange’ was sold at INR 2,59,21,480. This is an impressive example of the exemplary landscapes the artist painted during the early phase of his career.

An untitled oil on canvas, lot no. 76, by M F Husain executed in 1976 was sold at INR 5,64,41,933. It is a grand example of his affinity for the national animal of the country – the tiger.

Another highlight was lot no. 190 – Jehangir Sabavala’s ‘The Sky Like a Furnace Burning’. This oil on canvas, executed in 1968, was sold at INR 4,49,75,700. The work is said to be inspired by his love for the sunsets of the town of Mahabaleshwar.
