‘Soham’ – A Visual Expression of Non-Duality by Vasudeo Kamath at Jehangir!
Mumbai, 6th November
‘Soham’ – A Series of Visual Expressions – A solo exhibition of exquisite paintings by renowned artist Vasudeo Kamath is all set to be inaugurated at the prestigious Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai on Tuesday, 7th November.
In an exclusive interaction with Chinha Art News, Vasudeo Kamath shared the conceptual background and the thought process behind this unique show. He began with clarifying that this show is about the ‘oneness’ or the ‘non-duality’ that he experiences everywhere – across individuals, across seemingly different approaches to art, seemingly different approaches to spirituality, human interactions and what not. He emphasized that all these apparent differences are merely at a surface level, while everyone and everything is ultimately connected to each other and are visual replicas of the same inner energy.
Once this is realized in principle, one is freed from every difference that creates friction, hatred and animosity at every level. This principle of oneness or non-duality is the basis of a spiritual path that is lined with the single word chant of ‘Soham’ which in Sanskrit means – ‘I Am Him’ (and vice versa). As the ‘Soham’ chant fills the universe with the message of non-duality, Kamath is inspired with divine vision that shows him various harmonious interactions of Krishna with other mythological characters.
Thus Vasudeo Kamath takes the viewers onto a journey of this spiritual awakening of realization of ‘Soham’ through various popularly known mythological characters in the Hindu religious scriptures – Krishna, Hanuman, Viththal and their interactions with each other.
However, Kamath points out clearly that his paintings are not religious, but they are expressions of the pointed truth of spiritual non-duality. Further, he explains that the mythological characters in his paintings may evoke a sense of figurative painting however what must be born in mind that the essence that he is trying to convey through these apparent figures is not limited to the figures, it rather transcends the duality between figurative painting and abstraction. Truly, at the maturity level of a painting maestro such as Vasudeo Kamath, one is able to see beyond what is seen physically in a painting and is equally able to show others what is beyond what can be seen with the naked eyes.
To have this exquisite experience, you must visit ‘Soham’ and interact with Vasudeo Kamath and his paintings at Jehangir Art Gallery yourself.
