The “Bold and Beautiful” expressions of M. Ramlingam at Jehangir
June 7th – A solo exhibition featuring the remarkable artworks of M. Ramalingam will take place from June 6th to June 12th, 2023 at the prestigious Jahangir Art Gallery. Ramalingam, despite his deafness and impaired speech, has achieved extraordinary artistic prowess. The solo exhibition at Jahangir Art Gallery offers an opportunity to experience the depth and creativity of Ramalingam’s artwork. Visitors can expect to witness his bold use of colors, evocative motifs such as banana trees and tigers, and thought-provoking metaphors that subtly convey a powerful message about the freedom of women in today’s society.
M. Ramalingam’s portrayal of women in his artwork showcases their freedom and courage. This is evident through the deliberate strokes and bold color choices in his pieces. Despite the relatively short length of Ramalingam’s brushstrokes, the pressure applied on the canvas conveys the resilience and boldness of women who face societal pressures.
Through his artistic endeavours, he incorporates symbolic elements like banana trees, tigers, and undergarments that envelop women. These metaphors serve as poignant subtext, delving into deeper layers of meaning. In essence, his artistic expression raises the thought-provoking query: “Does true liberation exist for women in the contemporary epoch?”
The courageous incorporation of vibrant colors, such as shades of red, blue, and bold black brushstrokes, serves as a profound exploration of the inherent sensuality found within women. These artistic choices defy the societal norms that often suppress and stifle the expression of feminine allure in daily life.
He has showcased his talent in numerous exhibitions and events, spanning several years and countries. Some notable highlights of Ramalingam’s artistic journey include his participation in the 2019 Art Heart Monsoon Art Camp in Kolwan, India, the 2018 La Porte Peinte exhibition in Noyers Sur Serein, France, and the 2011 Fundacion Valparaiso residency in Spain, among others. He has received recognition and grants such as the Exhibizone Grand Prize in the USA in 2022 and the Travel Grant from DEPWD, Govt. of India in 2023. Ramalingam’s recent solo exhibition made its mark in two prominent locations, Russia and Poland. In 2023, the exhibition concluded its successful run at the 3rd International Exhibition & 22nd International Plein Air R+R Soon in Russia. This event provided an international platform for Ramalingam to showcase his exceptional artwork and receive recognition from a diverse audience. Similarly, in 2020, Ramalingam’s solo exhibition took place as part of the 16th International Biennial of Disabled People’s Arts in Poland.
Ramalingam’s solo exhibitions have captivated audiences, including the Kala Mela 2020 at LKA New Delhi, the Experimental Art Gallery at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, and the Chitrakala Parishath in Bangalore, India. His participation in group exhibitions and events, both nationally and internationally, further demonstrates his artistic range and influence.
