Dhruva Mistry at Akara Contemporary!

Mumbai – 4th October

Dhruva Mistry’s solo exhibition ‘At The Turn of Form’ is currently going on at Akara Contemporary at Colaba in Mumbai.

As the name suggests, the works in this exhibition take an interesting turn on abstract forms, sometimes stretching, turning around, bending and assuming shapes that challenges the sensory perception. Mario D’Souza expands the experiences further for the viewers as, “Drawn from past forms, this revisitation expands the potential of ideas with time. It offers clarity, evolution and in some cases a mutation – a development, disintegration or a doing over. It isn’t hard to miss how Mistry folds the tenets of abstraction, architecture and drawing into a lustrous steel, a material that has become synonymous with his practice.” The forms are sometimes identifiable to known forms yet at times they turn in such a way that they provide a view into another dimension of the form.

Dhruva Mistry has been quite experimentative here with the forms as well as with the materials and scale. Such as steel bent to its limits, providing as both scaffold and flesh, porosity and opacity with surprising delicateness.

At times, it is even interesting how the artist has treated the materials and has reoriented or even mutated them, such as treating metal like paper, to fold and cut. The figures and forms respond to the space around them and create a scenic aura around them as they assume their identity while taking different shapes.

The exhibition invites the viewer to partake and position ourselves, to share space and reorient movement – to experience form in scale and in its colossal shadow.
