Exhibitions at Jehangir – Week 37 of 2023

Week 37 of 2023: 11-18th Sept 

This week’s art exhibition plan at the Jehangir Art Gallery opened with a grand lineup of seven new solo exhibitions for this week. The shows are getting attention, amidst the cheerful hustle and bustle of art lovers. Here is a brief account of these shows.

Auditorium Hall

“Kala Sarala” – An exhibition of over 100 paintings by late Smt. Saraladevi Mazumdar organized by ‘Kala Sarala Parivar’. Renowned Art Critic & Litterateur and a Gandhian Thinker Dr (Smt) Varsha Das was the Guest of Honor of the inaugural function on Tuesday, 12th September.

Saraladevi Mazumdar (1911-2001) was a born talented artist who got trained at Sir J J School of Art (1936-39) under the tutelage of Jagannath Ahivasi. She painted prolifically on themes such as Shiva Mahimna Stotram, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Lord Krishna’s childhood. She also created illustrations for Gujarati and Marathi magazines. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, she authored a children’s book in 1969, about his transformation from Mohan to Mahatma, which got translated into 15 Indian and 3 foreign languages. Her exhibitions have been held in Eastern and North-Eastern India, Wardha, Mumbai, Pune, Anand, and regularly featured at Sarvodaya Melas in Gujarat. Three of her paintings have a permanent place at Sabarmati Ashram.

“Vision of View” – Paintings by Ms Vijeta Prajapati. 

Vijeta Prajapati is presenting her painting series ‘Vision of View’ which is inspired by the struggles in her own life, as well as those unexpressed feelings that every human being has in their heart but unable to express freely. She is confident that her journey expressed through her paintings would help the viewers to find answers to their unanswered life questions and get the right direction. Vijeta’s every painting in this exhibition is a unique vision on multiple aspects.

“Transcendental Perception” – Paintings by Bhiva Punekar. 

Bhiva Punekar received his art education at Kalavishwa Mahavidyalaya Sangli and Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai. He actively participated in solo and group art shows, art camps, workshops, and special exhibitions. His current mixed media series on paper explores the subtle nuances of transcendental perceptions of the cosmos’s external splendor. It highlights the sanctity and significance of the five divine elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space, along with their auras, resulting in ethnic and exquisite visual representations of glory.

“Transcendience of Banaras” – Paintings by Paneri Bhiva Punekar. 

Paneri Bhiva Punekar, an artist educated at Sophia College Mumbai, Bharatiya Kala Mahavidyalaya Pune, and Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai, has actively participated in solo and group art exhibitions in Mumbai and Pune. She has received awards and appreciation from art enthusiasts and collectors, inspiring her to create theme-based artwork showcased in leading art galleries. Using poster colors on paper, her current series, “Transcendence of Banaras,” showcases her thematic conceptual work on the religious sanctity, glory, and divine fervor of the holy city of Varanasi (Banaras). Paneri’s unique style adorns her works with ethnic and exquisite hues of eternity, capturing the divinity found in temples, shrines, places of worship, the continuous chanting of hymns at Ghats, and the overall spiritual atmosphere of Banaras.

“Blossoms in Bloom: A Floral Fantasy” – Paintings by Sandhya Manne.

Chennai based artist Sandhya Manne, India’s first Certified Zentangle Teacher, specializes in oil paintings and intricate ‘Zentangle’ ink drawings. She has shared her expertise by teaching Zentangle in the USA and now in Chennai. Her collection centers on the ethereal beauty of flowers, each bloom symbolizing concepts like love, growth, and resilience. Flowers serve as a reminder of life’s cyclic nature and the enduring essence of the human experience. Sandhya’s artistic journey is a self-discovery expedition, blending colors, textures, and motifs to resonate with the soul. By combining Zentangle collage with oil paintings and a floral theme, she aims to create a captivating visual experience celebrating life’s beauty, emotional complexity, and mindfulness. Sandhya promotes Zentangle for mindfulness through corporate sessions, private workshops, and online courses, impacting aspiring artists globally.

“Waters of Life” – Paintings by Sonali Durga Chaudhari

Sonali Durga Chaudhari is a New Delhi based artist, a Fine Art graduate from College of Art, Delhi. Her work is inspired by her extensive travels in the Himalayan regions and the upper Gangetic belt. Sonali has exhibited her works widely across India and abroad. She is proud recipient of the ‘Iconic Women Creating a Better World for All’ award by Women Economic Forum and a prestigious award from the Indian Council for UN relations. presented She believes that her paintings depict the strength and beauty of nature, of which the humans are an integral part but have unfortunately forgotten in the modern times. Sonali’s paintings highlight the transformation of the human spirit from bondage to freedom, seeking pure bliss in oneness with the universal consciousness.

“Celebration of Indian Steam Locomotives” – Paintings by Kishore Pratim Biswas

Kishore Pratim Biswas is a renowned Mumbai based contemporary artist known for his unconventional themes. Kishore is a graduate in Fine Art specialized in Painting from Govt College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. His works have been featured in several solo and group exhibitions in London, Dubai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai. Some of the popular themes touched by Kishore Pratim Biswas include femininity and the beauty of women. In the current exhibition, Kishore has presented his creations from the Locomotives series that stems from his childhood nostalgia from Kolkata. His skillful brush strokes create the energy of the steam engine on canvas, transposing the viewers into the British Raj colonial era of heavy locomotives and triggers personal memories associated with them.
