Exhibitions at Jehangir – Week 42 of 2023

The exhibition plan at Jehangir Art Gallery this week has a lineup of four new shows, with six artists based at diverse locations across Mumbai, Thane, New Delhi, and Solapur having diverse styles and themes in their artistic expressions. Here is a brief account of these fascinating shows.

Spiritual Reflections – An exhibition of paintings and installations by Dr Archana Srivastava

Dr. Archana Shrivastava is Founder & CEO of ‘ArtSage’, and a Mumbai based artist deeply rooted in Indian culture and philosophy, and holds a doctorate in Indian History. In the last two and half decades, she has displayed her art works in reputed national and international art galleries and art fairs across China, France, Spain, Japan, and USA. She has been recognized with several prestigious awards, some of which include ‘Make in India Award’, ‘Woman of Excellence Award’, ‘Collector’s Vision International Art Award’, ‘Power of Creativity Art Prize’, ‘LUXlife Global Excellence Award’ for ‘Best Contemporary Artist’, ‘The Collectors Art Prize 2023’ and ‘Leonardo da Vinci International Award’ in the past five years. ‘Spiritual Reflections’ is her third exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery which presents her select works on the themes that depict philosophical subjects of Bhagavad Gita, devotional renditions of Radha-Krishna and delineation of metaphysical aspects of Buddhism. She believes in using art as a tool for expressing profound and intangible ideas, to uncover the meaning within these scriptures such as Bhagavad Gita and ancient vedic texts and to share their meaning in a simplified manner to the viewers.

Ecstasy – An exhibition of sculptures by Bhagwan Rampure

Bhagwan Rampure is an accomplished sculptor based in Mumbai with a career spanning the past three and a half decades, dotted with numerous awards and recognitions. ‘All India Awards for Excellence in Advertising’, ‘Abhang Kalakar Puraskar’, and ‘Maharashtrian of the year 2013 Loakmat Award’ are some highlights of his distinguished career. He has created an impressive array of works, that includes the massive ‘Sultan Qaboos Rose’ in Mascat to various sculptures and murals across India. Notable pieces include the ‘Big Bull’ at the Bombay Stock Exchange and the towering 108 feet ‘Adi Shankaracharya Sculpture (Statue of Oneness)’ in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh.

This show titled ‘Ecstasy’ represents a profound emotional state of ecstasy characterized by intense joy and euphoria. It’s a state of mind where one feels deeply connected to the universe or a higher power and often denotes a heightened state of consciousness. The sculptures presented here aptly represent the deep sense of ecstasy.

A solo exhibition of paintings by Mogglan Bhau Shravasti

Mogglan Bhau Shravasti is a senior Mumbai based artist with over three decades of professional experience. He is well known for his expertise in portraiture, and for his deeply emotive and spiritual paintings of Buddha. He has conducted his doctoral research on ‘Aesthetics of Buddhist Painting’.

Irresistible Relations’ – A solo exhibition of Paintings by Asit Kumar Patnaik

Asit Kumar Patnaik is a Delhi based senior artist who has had an illustrious career over the last three decades. He is BFA Gold Medalist from BHU, Varanasi and has received several prestigious awards in national and international level. He has consistently exhibited his works in solo and group shows across various parts of India and abroad across Italy, Singapore, Indonesia Thailand, Dubai, USA, France and more.

Irresistible Relations’ has figures of a male and a female. It is through subtle variations in their positions, gestures and gaze that he communicates to the viewers his experiences and observations on various aspects of human relationships. The gaze shared between these figures possesses a multifaceted quality, capable of evoking nostalgia, contemplation, introspection, and even a sense of anticipation for the future.

‘Majestic Symphony’ A solo exhibition of paintings by H R Das

Hare Ram Das is a well-known Mumbai based artist with over three decades of experience. He has an MFA from KSO University, Mysore. He has several awards and recognitions to his credit that include Painting awards,from prestigious Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation, AIFACS, The Art Society Of India, and Bombay Art Society. He has consistently exhibited his paintings through exhibitions across galleries across India through over 125 shows over the past two decades. His paintings and sculptures are part of collections across USA, UK and UAE and in several prestigious institutions in India.

‘Majestic Symphony’ is an exhibition that opens the majestic world of bulls and horses through stunning visual presentation, wherein these magnificent creatures spring to life. He masterfully captures the raw power, unwavering pride, and profound spirit of bulls and horses. His unique rendering pays homage to these domesticated animals, integral to rural life in India. His sculptures resonate with energy, and celebrate their freedom.

‘Shringar’ An exhibition of sculptures by Dharmraj Rampure

Dharmaraj Rampure is a master sculptor based in Solapur with over four decades of holistic experience in and contribution to sculpture. In this show titled ‘Shringar’, he has presented a series of sculptures of Indian women in metal and fibre. The beautiful women in this series are seen assuming various poses as they adorn themselves and get ready with delicate ornaments exemplifying their natural beauty. The masterful rendition of Rampure executes their elegant smiles and intricate ornamentation with a graceful taste.

‘Atheira’ – An exhibition of paintings by Mini Suboth

Mini Suboth is a Mumbai based artist with over 25 years of professional experience in painting. Originally from Kerala, she trained herself in art through Institute of Cine Arts in Kerala and Fine Arts Institute in Trivandrum, despite lack of support from her parents to pursue a career in fine art. With support from her husband and her unwavering passion for art, she struggled through her way to become an established artist and now runs her own art studio – ‘Art Strokes’ in Mumbai where she trains art enthusiasts of all ages to enable them become professional artists.

Mini receives her inspiration from nature which she believes casts an enchanting spell that captivates the mind. The current exhibition, ‘Atheria’ is based on the artistry inspired by ‘Nature,’ which serves as a poignant testament to this enduring connection between the natural world and the realm of artistry. Her exquisite canvases remind the viewers that the earth’s landscapes are not mere backdrops; they are intricate storytellers, narrating tales of time, evolution, and wonder. Mini has continuously been traversing a path of artistic evolution wherein she explores depths of the human condition through her heart touching portraits. Her latest endeavor is delving into the realm of abstract paintings which explore the unexplored depths of the spiritual.
