Exhibitions at Jehangir – Week 44 of 2023

The exhibition plan at Jehangir Art Gallery this week has a lineup of six new shows of paintings, of two art galleries and four individual artists. Mumbai based Chemould Prescott Road art gallery is currently celebrating their completion of 60-year long presence in the art scene in India, a special part of which is happening at Jehangir Art Gallery this week. Archer Art Gallery based at Ahmedabad is presenting their collection of Serigraphs by Indian Master artists. The four solo shows this week are by artists based at diverse locations across Mumbai, Kolhapur, Pune, and Indore, each one representing their own diverse styles and themes in their artistic expressions. Here is a brief on of all these captivating shows.

‘Remembering – 60 Years of Chemould’ A Special Exhibition of rare paintings and sculptures by Chemould Prescott Road Art Gallery, celebrating their completion of 60 years.

‘Remembering – 60 Years of Chemould’ is a special exhibition that joins the two six-week-long celebratory exhibitions that together provide a complete view of the 60-year legacy of Chemould Prescott Road. This one-week long exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery is even more special because it is held at the original place where the Chemould Art Gallery used to be, until around 16 years ago. As Chemould continues to celebrate their 60-year completion, it is time to remember everything that went into transforming this dream of the legendary founders – Kekoo and Khorshed Gandhy – into a premiere art gallery of India. The gallery has not only nurtured art but also shaped numerous artists at their early phase, who went on to become the major contributors of contemporary art in India.

The impressive line-up includes sculptures by Adi Davierwala and Piloo Pochkhanwala and paintings by Prabhakar Barwe, Vasudeo Gaitonde, Nasreen Mohamedi, Mehlii Gobhai, Krishen Khanna, Rummana Husain, M F Husain, Akbar Padamsee, S H Raza, K H Ara, Tyeb Mehta, Hema Upadhyay, Homi Patel, Jangarh Singh Shyam, Jivya Soma (Warli Artist), Jagdish Swaminathan, Jehangir Sabavala, Tushar Joag, Zarina Hashmi, Bhupen Khakhar, and Satish Panchal.

In her message Shireen Gandhy, Director of Chemould Prescott Road conveys that this exhibition honors both artists and collectors alike, the artists who have had a history with the gallery and the collectors who bought their first work of art from Chemould. The mix of artists that are presented here, have been an important part of the gallery’s roster. This is a golden opportunity for art lovers to view some of the prime estate of the art world as Chemould’s collectors have graciously loaned their precious possessions specially for this exhibition.

‘Masters of India’ – Limited Edition Serigraphs by Archer Art Gallery

Ahmedabad based Archer Art Gallery is presenting this special exhibition and sale of ‘Limited Edition Serigraphs’ by 15 of the most renowned artists of India. The artists are, M F Husain, S H Raza, Haku Shah, Jyoti Bhatt, A Ramachandran, Jogen Chowdhury, Manu Parekh, Anjoli Ela Menon, Jatin Das, Madhvi Parekh, Thota Vaikuntam, Vrindavan Solanki, Amit Ambalal, Atul Dodiya and Seema Kohli.

Print making is one the oldest forms of artistic expressions known to mankind since the 14th Century. Serigraphs are prints made by pushing ink through a screen, traditionally silk but now often polyester or nylon. Their history took a modern turn in 1938 with an innovative group of New York artists, and it gained fine art recognition and popularity in the 1960s, thanks to artists like Andy Warhol.

Started as a modest atelier at Ahmedabad in 1978, Archer Art Gallery has been in the forefront in using Print making and Serigraphy as means to fulfil the demand for authentic reproductions of the topmost artists at an affordable price for the common man. All the limited edition graphics executed by Archer are carefully examined and signed by the respective artists making it a collectable piece of art. The exhibition provides the art lovers an opportunity to view and buy the art of the modern masters in the form of serigraphs.

‘Frozen Moment’ A solo exhibition of paintings by Yuvraj Patil

Yuvraj Patil, is a Kolhapur based master of charcoal artistry, who can captivate viewers with the elegance of simplicity. He had consistently presented his works across India through over 50 art exhibitions in the two decades, and has won several awards. Through his works, he expresses his belief that life is a nuanced dance of black and white. ‘Frozen Moment’ exhibition presents 27 exquisite paintings, made in oil or charcoal in canvas each capturing a singular moment in time. Inspired by landscapes, semi-abstract, abstract, still life, and figurative paintings, Yuvraj’s work reveals that the most profound stories are often told in shades of monochrome.

‘Colours of Mystery– A solo exhibition of Paintings by Shrikant Kadam

Shrikant Kadam is Pune based artist, a Postgraduate in Fine Art. His about three-decade long art career spans over 60 shows in India and 11 shows abroad including countries such as USA, UK, Holland, Germany, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea to name a few. He has several awards to his credit including Sir J J School of Art and Art Society of India. Shrikant Kadam believes that art is a continuous journey of life which shows many creative spots, hence an artist is not restricted by a certain style or thematic concepts for their expression, rather the joy lies in this explorative journey. Regarding what he does in his paintings, he says that he tries to transform the nature his imagination and portrays it in his special manner. In ‘Colours of Mystery’, he has presented his abstract paintings which engulf the viewer and takes him into another realm.

‘ExpressionsA solo exhibition of paintings by Madhushree Muchchal

Madhushree Muchchal is a senior artist originally from Kolkata, now based at Indore. She has had more than 15 solo and 45 group shows across prestigious galleries in India and around the world, including a recent show in California, USA in April 2023 that claimed much appreciation. She is the proud recipient of prestigious awards – Stri Shakti Award, AIFACS Award and Lokmanya Tilak Award. Through this show ‘Expressions’ the artist presents the artistic depictions of her emotions while allowing the viewer to explore their inner self, too. Each painting is adept with the interplay of vibrant colours, mysterious forms, and bold textures. For the artist, the process of painting is a meditative one, that brings out her emotions and reflections. Her paintings are with vibrant colours that elevate the soul and gives positive vibrations. She believes that art breathes new life into ourselves and gives a special kind of happiness.

‘Inner Odyssey’ A solo exhibition of paintings by Sunil Jadhav

Sunil Jadhav is a Postgraduate in Fine Art based in Pune, having over three decades of professional experience in painting as well as in Art Direction, when he worked for many popular films in Hindi and Marathi. Throughout the past three decades, he has been engaged in solo and group shows in major art galleries across India. He is recipient of prestigious scholarship from Lalit Kala Akademi and many awards. His paintings find place in the collection of institutions like National Academy of Modern Art, Karnataka Lalit Kala Akademi and in the collection of major political leaders, and film personalities.

Sunil Jadhav’s paintings are realistic yet unaffected by the constraints of realism. He believes that brush strokes on the canvas are not merely a physical act but it is the process of listening to the whispers of the universe, melding spirituality, nature and the unyielding passion into a harmony. Each of his paintings is a testimony to this belief and passion.

Art lovers can plan their visit to Jehangir Art Gallery to experience these wonderful exhibitions until 6th November between 11 am and 7 pm.
