“Expression Through Impression” Printmaking Exhibition by Ajit Seal

Guwahati, Assam – The Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra celebrated its Silver Jubilee with the grand opening of the solo printmaking exhibition titled “Expression Through Impression.” The exhibition showcases the remarkable artworks of renowned Indian printmaker Ajit Seal and is curated by Dr. Meghali Goswami.

The inaugural event took place on June 2nd, 2023, at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Society in Guwahati. Ajit Seal, who is currently heading the Department of Printmaking at Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati Santiniketan, presented a collection of his prints reflecting his two decades of experience. The exhibition featured around 175 works, including etchings, intaglio, woodcut prints, wood engravings, lithography, plate lithography, and enamel works.

During the opening ceremony, two books were released: “Expression Through Impression: Black and White Wood Engraving and Woodcut Prints of Ajit Seal” and “Where the Mind Guides the Hands: Lithography and Plateography Prints of Ajit Seal,” both authored by Dr. Meghali Goswami.

Distinguished guests attended the event, including Prof. Amarjyoti Chowdhury, former Vice-Chancellor of Guwahati University, Monidipa Borkotoki, ACS, Additional Secretary of the Cultural Affairs Department, Govt. of Assam, Siddhartha Tagore, owner of Art and Deal publication and owner of Art Konsult and MAATI Art Gallery, and Sjt. Sonaram Nath. The welcome speech was delivered by Sjt. Jayanta Kumar Goswami, ACS, Planning and Development Adviser of Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra.

Ajit Seal’s exhibition has made history in the entire North East region, as it presents a wide range of printmaking techniques and imagery. His artworks display versatile techniques and symbolic references to Indian mythology and auspicious symbols derived from religious conviction. Ajit Seal’s works not only reflect his personal experiences but also engage with contemporary art practices and self-identity issues.

The exhibition will be open to the public until June 10, 2023, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Art enthusiasts and the general public are invited to visit Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra and experience the unique artistry of Ajit Seal.
