Kalaichemmal Awards at Chennai!

The prestigious ‘Kala Chemmal Awards’ were conferred upon senior artists in Painting and Sculpture at Chennai Government Museum Complex, Chennai by the Department of Arts and Culture, Government of Tamil Nadu. The awards were given away by Minister for Information and Publicity – M P Saminathan. The grand ceremony and presentation of ‘Kalai Chemmal’ awards took place with the gracious presence of officials including Tourism, Culture and Charitable Institutions Department, Government Principal Secretary K. Manivasan, and Mr Gandhi – Director, Arts and Culture Department.

Awards included various categories viz. Traditional artists – Lakshmi Krishnamurthy (Painting), L. Radhakrishnan (Sculpture), T. V. Murugan (Sculpture) and Modern artists – M. Ramalingam (Painting), M. Velayutham (Sculpture), A. Lokanathan (Sculpture) who received the award citation and a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh. In other award categories, a total sum of Rs 6.5 lakhs was awarded to 30 senior artists who created the best artworks in the exhibition (Rs 15 thousand each) and 20 young artists (Rs 10 thousand each) as a token of appreciation. Apart from these, 10 art writers and 3 best art book writers were awarded Rs.10 thousand each.

On this occasion, Minister Saminathan also inaugurated the exhibition of 225 works of art selected from the applications received from painters and sculptors for the state level art exhibition.
