‘My Rooted Friends’ at Nehru Centre

While strolling amidst nearby trees, a sudden realization struck: these trees communicated through swaying branches and feather-like leaves, expressing unique emotions. Their textures, colors, and forms varied. Inspired, he grabbed his pen, translating these trees onto paper, creating a series. Days, weeks, and months passed by, making one drawing after another. Alongside his children, he explored Mumbai, observing diverse types of trees. This is Prof. Mangesh G Rajadhyaksha’s story—an artist and teacher.

Rajadhyaksha’s childhood passion for painting led him from Belgaum to Mumbai, where he received guidance from renowned art teachers such as Mr. K B Kulkarni and Ravi Paranjape. He pursued his passion at the Sir J J Institute of Applied Art, focusing on Graphic Design. Eventually, he returned to J J as a teacher, mentoring numerous students. His journey culminated with him becoming the institute’s Dean, serving a successful tenure. He also enriched the art community by collecting rare original paintings from famous artists like Dalal, Mulgaonkar, and D G Godse, sharing their art with enthusiasts.

Rajadhyaksha’s deep love for sketching became a constant part of his life. Whether in his office or during meetings at the Mantralaya, his hands would instinctively start sketching. He created numerous portraits during this period and even organized an exhibition called ‘Face Value.’ Later, he showcased paintings inspired by music at Oberoi’s ‘Gallery Art Walk.’ Now, at 79, he’s set to exhibit his tree drawings at the Nehru Center Art Gallery in Worli from September 12th to 18th. These intricate pen drawings capture the essence of different tree parts, captivating the viewer’s imagination. This exhibition is a must-see for art enthusiasts and students alike. Mrs. Neena Rege, Director of Nehru Center Art Gallery, will inaugurate the exhibition on 12th September, which will be open daily from 11.00 am to 7.00 pm until 18th September.

Location: Nehru Centre Art Gallery, Nehru Centre, Dr. Annie Besant Road, Worli, Mumbai – 400018.
