Sandeep Mukherjee at Project88

‘Approaching Limits’, a solo exhibition by Sandeep Mukherjee is open for art lovers at Project 88 art gallery in Mumbai. The exhibition showcases Mukherjee’s life-sized sculptural forms and acrylic paintings, which are characteristic of his immersive and thought-provoking art. The show is welcoming art lovers from May 11th to July 1st, 2023.

Mukherjee’s work delves into the concepts of materiality, movement, and the intricate relationship between the human and non-humans in the face of entropy. Through his abstracted surfaces, he explores the boundaries and limits of perception, offering viewers a unique perspective on reality. Rather than seeking to transcend lived experiences, Mukherjee’s art embraces finite boundaries, precise edges, and contrasting textures, evoking desire, wonder, and uncertainty.
In this exhibition, abstraction becomes a verb for Mukherjee, as he slices and manipulates flowing matter to reveal hidden aspects and challenge the limitations of each perspective. His artworks oscillate between cosmic motifs and precise geometric forms, creating a dynamic tension between gestural excesses and rigid structures. Mukherjee’s art moves beyond the boundaries of traditional painting, incorporating sculptures that blur the line between materiality and metaphor. One notable piece, titled “Tree Skins,” features colossal sculpted forms resembling tree barks suspended mid-air, leaving impressions of the artist’s encounter with nature.
Sandeep Mukherjee, born in Pune, India, currently resides and works in Los Angeles. He holds an MFA from UCLA and has exhibited his work in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. His artworks can be found in notable public collections, including MOCA Los Angeles, MOMA New York, and LACMA Los Angeles. Mukherjee’s art has garnered recognition and he has been the recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and the Berlin Fellowship, among others.
