Mumbai, June 7, 2023 – Jehangir Art Gallery is proud to present an extraordinary exhibition of sculptures by the talented artist Kamalkant. The exhibition will be held at Gallery Number 1 of Jehangir Art Gallery, located at 161B, MG Road, Kala Ghoda, Fort, Mumbai. The event will commence on June 6th and run until June 12th, 2023, opening its doors from 11 am to 7 pm daily.
The inauguration of this remarkable exhibition took place on June 6th at 6 pm, with esteemed architect and interior designer Ar. Premnath presiding as the chief guest. The event was also graced by the presence of Mr. Anil Naik, an eminent artist, who was the guest of honor for the occasion.
Kamalkant’s sculptures intricately explore the depth and complexity of human faces. From June 6th onwards, art enthusiasts and visitors can witness his artistic journey unfold, encompassing a range of mediums such as cement concrete, acrylic, and dry pastels. With an unwavering focus on capturing the essence of faces, Kamalkant’s sculptures transcend traditional artistic boundaries.
This exhibition is the culmination of Kamalkant’s lifelong dedication to portraying the human countenance. His fascination with faces began in 1986 when he, along with a group of fellow artists, created terracotta faces inspired by the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Their public display at Tower Chowk in Ujjain attracted attention and eventually led to Kamalkant’s recognition as an artist, following a brief encounter with the police.
Over the years, Kamalkant’s passion for faces has evolved, leading him to experiment with different materials and techniques. Notable achievements include creating a portrait of Krishna Baldev Vaid alongside his story for “The Kahani Magazine” and crafting Amitabh Bachchan’s visage from Onyx and White marble in front of a Mumbai multiplex.
From 1995 to 1999, Kamalkant exhibited several cement concrete faces at Jehangir Art Gallery, where he received acclaim for his unique approach. Following a successful career in commercials, he transitioned to painting faces in 2013, garnering valuable feedback from exhibitions held across various cities, including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Puducherry.
Driven by an unwavering desire to experiment, Kamalkant ventured into sculpting faces from different stones during his work for Adani Township in Ahmedabad. This challenging endeavor resulted in stunning sculptures, which were later showcased at Amdavad ni Gufa.
Kamalkant’s sculptures explore the intricacies of human expressions and the underlying emotions that lie beneath. In an era dominated by technology and social media, he aims to remind viewers of the importance of face-to-face interaction and the subtle complexities of human connection.
