‘A Critic’s View’ by Keshav Malik to be released on 4th May

The various articles written by veteran Art critic Keshav Malik between 1965 and 2013 reviewing 37 Indian artists have now been compiled and published in book form. The book has been edited by Usha Malik. The book launch will take place on Thursday, 4th May 2023 at 6:30 PM at India International Centre, New Delhi. Writer and convener Siddharth Tagore will give the welcome address while Usha Malik will make the opening remarks at the programme.

Keshav Malik was a renowned Art critic, who regularly wrote for The Hindustan Times and The Times of India. In year 1973-74, Malik curated the exhibition “The Human Condition”. This exhibition of contemporary Indian art was held in Bulgaria, Poland, Belgium and Yugoslavia. His criticism of art was never from the perspective of art history, on the contrary as a poet, he had a deep sense of aesthetics. It was from this realization, that he reviewed art. He was very careful about what tone and tenor he used in his review of the artists as he did not want to hurt them. He would always express the strengths and weaknesses of a piece of art in gentle and precise terms. Hence, this collection of his essays will be a guide for both art scholars and critics.

Senior art critic Prayag Shukla will participate as the keynote speaker in this event. Prayag Shukla is an editor, writer and art critic. He has written a biographical book on veteran painter Swaminathan. Shukla will be joined by Amal Allana of The Alkazi Foundation For the Arts as a speaker. Along with this, NGMA’s Jyoti Tokas, Niren Sengupta, painters Arpana Caur, Kalicharan Gupta, Saba Hasan will participate in the discussion. Jyoti Kathapalia will be the moderator of this discussion. This book has been published by the magazine Art and Deal and this program has been organized to mark the entry of the institution into its 25th year.
