“Observāre” is the continuing visual attention to abstract forms by Vilas & Jin Sook Shinde, over the last four decades. Abstract “forms” which contrarily also have a structure within. This exercise requires an interpretative process where the visual grammar of an abstract work is transmitted into language but one which is seemingly without semantic certitude. Although the earlier works of both artists had shown an extensive exploration of representational and figurative expressions, the current abstracts are highly influenced by Nature, and both artists have chosen divergent ways to reveal its subtleties in their artworks.
While in conversation with Vilas, he said, “I have a natural feeling for every natural object”.
Observing the trees, rocks, tall grass and leafless bushes, he enjoys different moods for their beauty.” Vilas Shinde, attempts to express his ecstatic absorption of nature. He is particularly interested in colour harmonies and focuses on individual tints that appear and reappear in soothing repetition, creating an intuitive balance.
Conversely, Jin Sook has as her poetics a spontaneous expression of an inner impulse. Her subjects were her surroundings, the skies, animals, trees, flowers, human activities and portraits. Jin Sook’s works are not simply abstract variations of a landscape. Her recent work proves that she has begun experimenting with sculptures composed of paper, light, colour, and shadow. With these works, she has moved beyond the boundaries of conventional abstraction, extending its desire and expressive possibilities.
Born in 1953 in Satara, Maharashtra, Vilas Shinde completed his Diploma in Drawing and Painting from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1978, followed by a Post Diploma in Painting from the M.S. University, Baroda, in 1980. He also studied painting under S.W. Hayter at the Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Beaux–Arts and Printmaking in Paris, France. Jin Sook Shinde born in South Korea, graduated with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from the Hong IK College of Art, Seoul, in 1976. She later studied printmaking at Atelier 17, Paris from 1980 to ‘83, where English printmaker S.W Hayter mentored her. She also worked at the Glasgow Print Studio in 2000.
