Mrugank Joshi passes away

Mumbai, 05 July 2023 – Renowned Artist Mrugank Joshi, a former professor at JJ School of Art, passed away this morning due to a heart attack at his residence in Lonavala. He was 82 years old. He was an alumnus of the JJ School of Art. Later he joined the institution as a professor, where he gained a reputation as a beloved mentor to his students. Mrugank Joshi was not only an accomplished artist but also a scholar of Sanskrit, known for his recitation of verses. He also served as the Dean of Goa College of Fine Art for several years. He was a respected lifetime member of the Bombay art society.

After taking voluntary retirement from JJ School of Art, he resided in America for nearly two decades. During this period, he created numerous grand paintings at the Temple of Unity in Irving Town. Mrugank Joshi possessed extensive knowledge of Santa Sahitya (Literature based on Teachings of Saints), which influenced the theme-based paintings he created for the Temple of Unity.

Among his notable works, a thirty-foot painting adorns the Ramakrishna Math in Pune, while some of his pieces are housed in the collection of the Nehru Planetarium. Air India also possesses a selection of his artwork. Senior Artist Ravi Mandlik remarked, “Mrugank Joshi had an exceptional command on drawing and painting techniques. When he embarked on landscape paintings, he would attract a large crowd of art enthusiasts. Students and artists would marvel at his work.”

Mrugank Joshi is survived by his wife, two sons, and grandchildren. Chinha Art News pays tribute to this accomplished Artist, celebrating his contributions to the world of art and his legacy as a knowledgeable and revered artist.
